Visits and activities

LaM Vagabond - Diversity and inclusion

From autumn 2024, LaM will close its doors temporarily to carry out renovation work and will reopen in February 2026. While the museum is closed, it will continue to work alongside professionals in the social and disability fields, pursuing its artistic and cultural education initiatives and offering projects tailored to all ages. Numerous off-site activities and events, accessible to all, will also be deployed throughout the metropolitan and regional area.

Consult our proposals for off-site projects and our ratesonsulter.

As a place for sharing, inclusion and well-being, LaM places its visitors at the heart of the museum's life. For almost 40 years, the museum has been working to promote access to art and culture for as many people as possible, through a wide range of projects designed for and with people who are isolated, out of touch or excluded, whether in prisons, social or medico-social facilities, hospitals or mental health institutions.

Intimately linked to the museum and its identity, this desire for inclusion and the creation of social links has been accentuated by the arrival of the L'Aracine donation of works of art brut in its collection - including asylums, spiritists and works by marginalised people. Every year, almost 20,000 people benefit from projects run by the museum, whether they are organised within the institution or outside its walls.

Art projects with prisoners
Since 2004, for example, the museum has been running art projects with inmates in prisons in the Lille metropolitan area and the Hauts-de-France region (Quiévrechain, Vendin-le-Veil, Annœullin, etc.). In 2023, writing and theatre workshops were initiated by the museum in collaboration with artist Mohamed Bourouissa and actress, author and director Zazon Castro, at the Sequedin Prison. These workshops on words and directing led to the creation of the show Quartier de femmes.

Projects in medical facilities
A number of projects are also proposed each year in medical facilities (Lille University Hospital, Roubaix Hospital, Villeneuve d'Ascq private hospital), for people with cognitive, mental or intellectual disabilities, in particular with the Établissements Publics de Santé Mentale (public mental health establishments) in the Lille area, or by working with social sector specialists to strengthen the links between society and people at risk of social exclusion.

The professional card
LaM has developed a Professional Card scheme for structural specialists, allowing them free access to the museum with groups, as well as attendance at conferences, training courses, information meetings and so on.

An accessible museum

In its desire to help as many people as possible find a fulfilling and enriching relationship with the visual arts, the museum is developing an outreach programme aimed at everyone, from an early age, adapted to different types of disability, whether sensory, cognitive or motor, and without social distinction.

The museum offers a wide range of activities throughout the year:
Guided and active tours to encourage dialogue
Visits in sign language or tactile
Meetings and workshops for artistic practice in the museum and outside
Immersion projects for the day
Tailor-made projects for people from remote areas or with disabilities

Mediation tools
The LaM has also developed a number of media tools that are available to the public: 97 tactile reproductions of works in the collection and 12 reproductions of sculptures are available on request; a comic strip that presents the life of an artist in an intelligible and entertaining way; labels and visitor guides for children, and so on.

Educational kit
Recently, in partnership with Mes mains en or and Opéra bleu, and with the support of the Orange Foundation, the museum designed an educational kit for people with cognitive or mental disabilities, enabling them to visit the museum more independently. The kit, which consists of two digital mediation tablets, offers thirteen itineraries based on 4 themes (tactile, painting, sculpture and architecture). The kit is rounded off by a number of fun objects that can be handled.
